Black Gold Progression Guide
Progress by strengthening the weakest link in the complete field chain, not by chasing the most expensive-looking upgrade. The August 2026 developer update says progression was rebuilt, so older demo sequences and unlock assumptions are especially patch-sensitive.
The field decision
Progress by strengthening the weakest link in the complete field chain, not by chasing the most expensive-looking upgrade. The August 2026 developer update says progression was rebuilt, so older demo sequences and unlock assumptions are especially patch-sensitive.
Official current-build and patch facts are cited below. Suggested checks are editorial guidance; historical demo sources retain their original dates.
Quick facts
- The patch ties the stopping behavior to the final extraction level.
- It supplies no universal final depth.
- Upgrade level should increase treasure chance.
- The old scaling relationship was not functioning correctly.
- Current progression was rebuilt after Closed Beta feedback.
- Capacity without maintenance or transport can create idle assets instead of income.
- Home, worker, machine and technology upgrades serve different constraints.
- A reserve protects the next operating cycle from an upgrade that consumes all cash.
Current-build changes: 1.0.1
Derricks now stop firing at the final extraction level according to the 1.0.1 notes. A stopped firing action at that final stage can be the intended result, rather than a machine-service failure. Read the rig’s stage before replacing parts or buying another upgrade. The announcement does not define an exact final depth or say that every stopped Derrick has reached the final stage. Patch 1.0.1 fixes the relationship between Derrick upgrades and treasure-find chance: the chance should now increase with upgrade level. No percentages, guaranteed treasure schedule or exact payout are supplied. Use this as evidence that the upgrade relationship was repaired, not as a promise that your next extraction will find treasure or that treasure income will repay a particular upgrade.
Walkthrough
- 01
Read the field
Name the current constraint in one sentence: material, drilling, uptime, crew, storage or sale.
- 02
Stabilize the bottleneck
Choose the smallest change that releases that constraint rather than upgrading every category.
- 03
Record the result
Run one full cycle and compare visible output, delay and service burden.
- 04
Choose the next move
Promote the next constraint to the top of the list and preserve a maintenance reserve.

Common mistakes
- Applying pre-patch advice to derrick final extraction level behavior without comparing the corrected behavior.
- Applying pre-patch advice to derrick treasure chance and upgrades without comparing the corrected behavior.
- Treating an editorial troubleshooting step as an officially tested workaround.
Current context: patch 1.0.1. Historical demo mechanics remain qualified; check the source ledger before treating them as current-build behavior.
